My name is Ellen and I’m a filmmaker and self-shooting videographer from the Netherlands. I’ve recently relocated to the UK after finishing my 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking, and I’m now looking to move from freelance work into a corporate/agency environment, where I can fully utilise and develop my creative, organisational and communication skills.
I started my career path doing a foundation year in International Fashion & Branding at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. This is where I learnt the basics of branding, styling, visual culture and graphic design. I developed a passion for building concepts, carefully designing all the elements within my work to reinforce one another, but after finishing the year I decided that I wanted to delve more into storytelling.
My film course was very broad, training me to be able to go through the whole filmmaking process by myself. As a result of this, I’m a confident camera operator with great editing skills, basic knowledge of lights, sound (editing), colour grading and motion graphics. There was however space within the course to specialise in certain roles that matched my skills and interests. As a result of this, I consider my key qualities to be:
–Concept development, including pitching, creative writing, visual communication such as mood and storyboarding, and writing film plans.
–Production: using my excellent organisation, planning and communication skills, as well as my pro-active attitude.
–Art direction, e.g. set design, styling, mise-en-scène and use of colour and texture.
–Directing: using my oversight and ability to lead a team whilst bringing out the best in my collaborators.
My favourite projects to work on are music videos. They rely heavily on aesthetics, visual language and rhythmic editing, which instantly takes you along into the atmosphere and pacing of the video. This may not seem too relevant for, say, corporate projects, but I strongly believe that these elements are key if you want to make video content that really engages people. I think any type of video can and should be beautiful/impactful/touching, which is why I try to incorporate these elements in all of my projects.
As a one-(wo)man-band, or as a member of a small (self-assembled) team, I’ve worked with a number of clients during and after university. Examples include the GGD (a Dutch national public health institute), BiNKi (a sustainable and ethically produced baby clothing brand), NEVA (a dance/theatre collective) and a bunch of up and coming musicians.
A few more quick notes that might be relevant: I have my own basic kit (Sony A7S-ii, a gimbal and a bunch of accessories). I have cross-European cultural experience and speak 4 languages. I’m technically an award-winning filmmaker since I won last year’s 2Weeks2MakeIt music video competition. And finally, I have a very strong work ethic and I’m endlessly passionate about making great videos!
